Coronavirus (COVID-19) advice for international students

The Commonwealth Government has developed advice for international students travelling to Australia: coronavirus (COVID-19) student support

Enrolment for non-commenced international students

On Thursday March 19, the Commonwealth Government announced new travel restrictions which prohibits the arrival of foreign nationals into Australia from 9pm (AEDT) on Friday 20 March 2020.

These restrictions mean that Victorian school students who are foreign nationals will not be able to travel to Australia until further notice.

Enrolment options

We've issued enrolment options and advice to the parents, guardians and education agents of all students who have not yet commenced to offer them the option to:

  • defer/temporarily suspend their enrolment (with tuition fees credited towards a future study period)
  • withdraw from the program (with their tuition fees for future study periods refunded).

This applies to:

  • all students scheduled to commence in Term 2, 2020
  • all Chinese students scheduled to commence in Term 1, 2020, including those in Years 11 and 12, who have not taken up the opportunity to seek an exemption to travel restrictions.

Chinese VCE students who were due to commence in Term 1 and have sought an exemption can continue to pursue that exemption if they choose to do so. We'll continue to work with the small number of schools hosting this cohort of students.

Enrolment for commenced international students

Some international students have decided they would like to return to their home countries, due to coronavirus (COVID-19) concerns and travel restrictions.

We've issued a factsheet via email for parents and guardians of international students to ensure currently enrolled students are afforded the same options as students who have not commenced.

Our goal is to ensure that the education and welfare of all students is not compromised as a result of coronavirus (COVID-19). We'll continue to do this in accordance with Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act 2000 and National Code.

More information about deferral/temporary enrolment suspension options and timeframes are included in the factsheet: Information for currently enrolled students about coronavirus

Commenced international students remaining in Victoria must continue to attend classes while schools are open. Students who do not attend school will need to have their absence recorded.
