For current school emergency closures, see: Emergency Closures

Early childhood services and schools at the highest risk of fire danger are placed on the Department’s Bushfire At-Risk Register.  Inclusion on this Register is a trigger for these facilities to pre-emptively close on days determined Code Red in their Bureau of Meteorology district by the Emergency Management Commissioner.  All bus routes servicing closed schools, including bus routes which they might coordinate as a bus coordinating school are cancelled.

Parents should be familiar with the details of the emergency management plan for their child’s early childhood service or school, including whether the school is listed on the Bushfire At-Risk Register and raise any queries or concerns with their child’s principal, teacher or school council representative.  Parents are also advised to make sure the school or service has their current contact details, including mobile phone number.

Schools should consider not only if they are located near bushland, but if they are located near grassland which could put the school at increased risk of grassfires.  Information and resources are available from the CFA.

Planned burning

Planned burning is conducted throughout the state to reduce the risk to communities from future bushfires.  For more information about where and when, contact the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667 or see: Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning
