About PEDS tip sheets

Current research acknowledges that parents recognise developmental concerns and signs of autism in their children early.

Prompts are now included in the PEDS tip sheets to alert MCH nurses. On the reverse side of these tip sheets, you will find additional information about the early signs of autism relevant to that particular age and stage.

Note: these tip sheets do not appear in the Maternal and Child Health Service: Practice Guidelines 2009.

Play, Learn, Grow

The Play, Learn, Grow resources are designed for Maternal Child Health (MCH) nurses to support the crucial role that families play in fostering their children's learning and development.

The Play, Learn, Grow resources are based on the following principles:

  • children are ready to learn
  • nurturing and responsive relationships in the first few years of a child's life are crucial for building the brain's architecture. These relationships lay the foundation for a child's future learning, health and wellbeing
  • contributing and belonging to family, culture and community is the foundation for children's identity and development
  • children learn through play
  • learning happens every day, everywhere
  • talking with and listening and responding to children helps them feel valued and loved.

Using the resources

MCH nurses can use the Play, Learn, Grow resources in the Key Ages and Stages consultations with families about their children's communication, play and learning.

Using the Play, Learn Grow in the MCH service booklet provides advice on how to work with parents and the Play, Learn, Grow resources:
