Teachers and school staff can now book confidential counselling online via live chat
School staff continue to be agile and adapt to changes in how they work, all while managing the impact of coronavirus (COVID-19) on other parts of their lives.
Accessing support for mental health has enormous positive impacts - not just on psychological wellness but also on physical wellbeing. Counselling can be an important part of rebuilding resilience to deal with the challenges ahead, and exploring strategies to help build coping skills.
To assist staff in accessing support, the
Employee Assistance Program (EAP) now offers the option to book a confidential counselling session via live chat.
The chat function is a new way to access support that will be easier for staff who are deaf, hard of hearing and/or have a speech impairment, and for those who prefer to book online rather than over the phone.
To access support through the EAP's live chat function, simply visit the
LifeWorks website and click on the 'chat' button at the bottom-right of the screen. Please note: Some older versions of web browsers may not support the chat function. If that is the case,
access the chat via a direct link.
More about the EAP
The EAP is an independent, confidential and free service that provides professional counselling 24 hours a day, seven days a week, as well as advice on a range of matters. Topics include, but are not limited to, stress management, depression and anxiety, work life balance, general financial support, and family issues.
The EAP also offers access to a network of specialised counsellors. When booking, staff can request to be paired with a counsellor with family violence or LGBTQI expertise, and Aboriginal staff can request support from counsellors experienced with the Koorie community.
All Department staff and their immediate family members aged 18 years and over, including school council employees and casual relief teachers, are eligible to access the EAP.
For more information, including access eligibility, access the EAP Frequently Asked Questions.
EAP Frequently Asked Questions
In addition to the live chat function on the LifeWorks
website, staff can also call 1300 361 008 to book a session.
An inclusive wellbeing tool
The Department is committed to the EAP being an inclusive service for all staff and their families. For staff who are deaf, hard of hearing and/or have a speech impairment, if the live chat booking option is not accessible to you, the National Relay Service (NRS) is also available to assist in connecting someone with the appropriate supports.
The NRS can be accessed through 1300 555 727, although using a trusted friend or family member to call is also welcomed. Depending on the needs of the individual, appropriate alternatives for support (including arranging for an Auslan interpreter to attend the session) can be accommodated at no cost to the employee.
