Sessional teaching vacancies for language teachers

Applications are invited from teachers qualified to teach one or more languages offered by the Victorian School of Languages

Victorian government school teachers are encouraged to apply to the Victorian School of Languages (VSL) for a sessional teaching vacancy for language teachers.

Applicants must be registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and be qualified to teach one or more of the languages offered by the VSL.

Successful applicants will gain roles teaching languages other than English that students are unable to study in their own schools.

Classes are held in Victorian government school buildings outside school hours, in metropolitan and regional areas, for students in Prep to Year 12 (VCE).

 Languages offered by the VSL

The VSL currently teaches the following 48 languages:

Albanian, Amharic, Arabic, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Chin Falam, Chin Hakha, Chin Matu, Chinese, Classical Greek, Croatian, Dari, Dinka, Dutch, Filipino (Tagalog), French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Karen, Khmer, Korean, Macedonian, Malay, Malayalam, Maltese, Mizo, Pashto, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Sinhala, Spanish, Swahili, Tamil, Thai, Turkish, Urdu and Vietnamese.

Successful applicants will be offered an annual contract and paid at a sessional rate determined by the Department. Staff are paid for 30 teaching sessions (four hours each) and two professional learning sessions (three hours each) annually.

How to apply

Teachers interested in applying must complete the employment application form available on the VSL website.

There is no closing date for applications. Submitted applications are kept for 12 months and considered when vacancies arise.

VSL non-teaching positions

Applications are also open for a limited number of non-teaching positions: supervisor, assistant supervisor, teacher librarian and administrative (clerical) officer. These positions are also sessional appointments and based on an annual application process.
