Strategies and guidance to help primary and secondary teachers deliver effective literacy programs
Teachers can refer to the resources outlined below for targeted support with the successful delivery of literacy programs in the classroom.
Diagnostic Assessment Tools in English (DATE) redevelopment
Diagnostic Assessment Tools in English (DATE) are available to all government schools on the
Insight Platform. The tools have been redesigned to improve user experience and usefulness:
• tools have been aligned to the Victorian English Curriculum from Level B (Towards Foundation) to Level 4
• reports are available for students and classes
• results can be generated
• data will be retained as a historical record to enable tracking over years
• assessments are simpler to navigate.
Teachers should familiarise themselves with the redeveloped
DATE and explore the added functionality. The previous DATE versions will no longer be available for generating new codes, however existing codes can still be accessed.
DATE can be used as a formative assessment of specific literacy skills such as spelling, phonological awareness or early reading strategies. DATE can also be used to monitor student progress through the Victorian English Curriculum.
For more information, refer to the
Insight Assessment Platform.
Literacy Teaching Toolkit for years 7 to 10
The

The toolkit provides strategies and resources for effective literacy teaching, from birth to Year 10, based on Australian and international research. The toolkit for years 7 to 10 includes discipline-specific information for secondary school teachers, through written content, learning sequences and expert and in-classroom videos.
Teachers should explore the
Literacy Teaching Toolkit to build their capacity in delivering successful literacy outcomes in secondary classrooms.
Designing Foundation to Grade 2 literacy lessons
New guidance for structuring literacy lessons for Foundation to Grade 2 is now available.
The resource helps teachers to draw on a range of literacy lesson approaches to support students’ learning needs. Three approaches are explored:
• the Workshop Model
• the Language Experience
• the Teaching and Learning Cycle.
Each approach is introduced in detail and includes example lesson plans to support practical implementation in Foundation to Grade 2 classrooms.
